what is the gyopo wife?

    although i, myself, am a gyopo or kyopo or 교포, i had never heard of the term until i had reached seoul in june of 2010. from what i have come to understand, gyopos are ethnic koreans but hold the nationality of a different country.
    for myself, i was born in the small town of london (not that london), ontario, canada, but grew up with questions like "what are you?" or "are you chinese? japanese?" (probably because korea wasn't as well known when i was younger) as i was growing up.

that my friends, is the meaning of the word "gyopo."

    to native koreans, we are not really korean, and personally, when i am with native koreans, i don't feel korean. to people of other nationalities, we probably seem more korean than whatever nationally we might be. and just as it is with native koreans, personally, when i'm around those who are of a different nationality other than korean, i feel very korean.
    i'm sure this kind of thinking or feeling will apply to other gyopos out there, but i'm also sure that there are those who don't feel the difference between ethnicity/nationality depending on the people you are with as much as i do.
    this blog is just a journal of experiences of me trying to be a korean-yet-not-totally-korean wife to my totally-korean husband. hopefully it will be helpful to some, or i will get advice from you, or at least it will just be amusing to read. ^^
